    ISBN 0-932716-12-1

Alice Judson Ryerson Hayes's (1922–2006) published work includes the poetry collections Excavation, Journal of the Lake and Water, and Sheba's Story, as well as a number of short stories. In 2002, Hayes received the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award, which the Illinois Humanities Council awards for exceptional contributions to the community. The Alice Judson Hayes Writing Fellowship is given out annually in her honor.

Alice Ryerson's poems are filled with tenderness and wit . . . She looks at strangers with curiosity and finds herself reflected. There is a consistently gallant spirit being revealed in these Excavations.
